Landscapes are the physical space that surrounds us. It can be the land, the water, or sometimes in outer space.
Nine Patch on Jupiter received the Juror’s Choice Award at the Art Gallery of Burlington’s Fibre Content 2018. Susan Warner Keene, a well-known Toronto artist and recipient of the 1992 Saide Bronfman Award for Excellence in Fine Crafts, was one of three jurors for this exhibition. She commented: The image of Jupiter’s clouds in space emerges as shifting colours and stitched lines coalesce delicately in a circular form that suggests, rather than states, the presence of the planet, floating in mysterious space. The underlying grid seems to allude to human effort to infinite space and time, while the careful and detailed making of the quilt, stitch by stitch, introduces a palpable sense of the maker’s presence and slow labour. The tension between states of matter, between the personal and the planetary, is intriguing.
